Movie List by date Reviewed

22 August 2010 - I watched "Kick-ass" recently. I had thought that it was another Rodriquez/Tarantino movie, which I typically have no use for and wouldn't watch. However, I was told by the assistant manager at our Hastings store that is was a good movie and rented it. I actually enjoyed it very much.

2 August 2010 - I finally watched "Jesse Stone: No Remorse". I only needed 5 minutes to remember that I had DVRed it on DishTV and watched it HD. I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed watching it without all of the commercials.

A friend had to spend sometime in the hospital emergency room and was sent home after receiving some pain medicine. I rented Cop Out because she wanted to see it.. I ended up stopping by and watching it with her family. It was kind of dumb at times but I could laugh.

16 July 2010 - I purchased Riverworld and "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo". I never finished either of them.

27 June 2010 - I wanted to buy "Green Zone" but they wanted $24.95. I was not willing to go that high. I rented it and I was glad I did. It was interesting but most of the situations simply seemed contrived. It was like George Clooney in "The Peacemaker". I have problems with rogue or over the top military officers. I may enjoy the movie one time but that is not enough to spend $25 on a Blu-ray. I kinda of chuckled recently when I looked at "New Releases" on Netflix because most of them were rated under 3-stars, which is the break point for liking the movie. I smiled because I realized that I wasn't the only one having problems.

17 June 2010 - I watched "The Book of Eli". It kind of reminded me of a gritty "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" meets "The Postman". I sat and watched it all of the way through but I didn't enjoy it.

Tonight, I rented "The Stranger" starring Steve Austin. I was entertained. That is all that I ask for.

I also enjoyed Sandra Bullock and "The Blind Side". Adopting a kid from the ghetto because he is close to homeless is not a typical situation. How they solved it made the movie very interesting.

11 June 2010 - I rented From Paris With Love. I was desperate, didn't really expect to like and didn't. I am back to renting PBS, History Channel, National Geographic types of movies from Netflix. The recent releases are really not my style.

5 June 2010 - I actually watched "The Wolfman" to the finish. I had to pause it several times and walk around for a while but I finished it. I thought the CGI was pretty bad at times. When the wolf was doing things, I didn't see the smooth effects like you can see in Avatar. It wasn't quite as bad as "The Messenger" and I should have never rented it. I am glad that I did because I could have purchased it on Blu-ray because of the stars.

It isn't my type of movie. I want to be intertained and it didn't entertain me. I have been resorting to renting TV series from Netflix. I just finished "Over There", which had lots of blood and gore and I really liked it. As you can see, I don't have problems with blood and gore. I just don't enjoy movies like Crazy Heart and The Messenger. Since they won awards, I am obviously out of tune with the industry.

21 May 2010 - "The Messenger" was another "what was I thinking when I rented it" movie. I made it half way and took it back. I don't enjoy movies like that. The problem for me is that they can be handled in such a way that I enjoy it or the alternative I can't deal with it at all. It was a "I can't deal with it movie".

13 May 2010 - "Edge of Darkness" is a thriller that I would usually not purchase or watch. I did both and the Blu-ray was exceptional. It wan't a movie I really liked such as Avatar but was completed in one session.

23 April 2010 - There are a couple of new movies that I liked. I will begin with 2012. Not a great plot but it was awesome to watch in BD.

Avatar was the movie that really got my attention. I wouldn't have left my chair if the telephone hadn't rang. For a 162 minute movie, that was exceptional. There were a few spots where it sounded like Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome. It is the section towards the end where the children are talking about Max like he was a God.

Dolan's Cadilac was ok but really not worth paying the list price.

20 January 2010 - I have been following a really crazy mix of movies. Some were historical such as "Mongol - The Rise of Genghis Khan" and some were considered christian inspirational such as "Beyond the Gates of Splendor". It all started when I read 2 books. The first one was "End of The Spear", which is about the 5 missionaries that were killed in Ecuador by the Waodani tribe. I have been looking for something about Genghis Kahn and found the book called "Genghis Kahn and the Making of the Modern World".

I didn't realize how large the Mogolean empire really was. A comparison with Africa was made by Jack Weatherford. Some pieces survived until 1920, when they were finally asimilated by the Soviets. It all began when I watched "Genghis Kahn: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea". This movie tended to follow events in the book. It wasn't the same timeline but it did include important events. Weatherford goes on to explain how a non-technical nomad tribe could facilitate technology important to the modern world in the 13th century. They didn't invent things but brought people together who could and did.

I watched "End of the Spear" when it was first released on VHS tape. Watching it on DVD was infinitely better. "Beyond the Gates of Splendor" was more like a documentry behind End of the Spear. The book includes an explaination of why the Waodani invited Aunt Rachel to come live with them. I won't spoil it here.

20 December 2009 - I have to rate "State of Play" with Russell Crowe and others, and "Only the Brave". Both of these movies were excellant. I purchased Harry Potter but didn't make it very far before I became bored and ejected the Blu-ray.

25 November 2009 - I watched "Angels and Demons" last night. I thought it was interesting. The big change was that it was converted from a prequel to a sequel. Dan Brown added a few changes to the story line in the script to make that work. It got away from the religious mumble jumble to more of a threat that could happen, if you ignore the anti-matter, which is still science fiction.

17 November 2009 - I stayed up until Midnight to buy "Star Trek" on Blu-ray. I watched it before I went to bed around 3am. It was an interesting movie. I looked at the rating on IMDb where it was rated at 8.3. It was good but not that good. I have problems with Kirk. He would never make it to Captain because he doesn't fit the mold. A Captain in the Navy is equivalent to an Army Colonel and Lieutenant Commander Kirk doesn't have nearly the ring that Captain Kirk does. I sat on the edge of my chair for most of the movie and that puts it into a special place in my rating system. Watching the special features was as interesting as the movie.

Hastings had a buy 1 and get 1 free sale, so, I also purchased "Logan's Run" on Blu-ray. I haven't watched it yet. I have had it on VHS, DVD, and now on Blu-ray. When it was originally released, I purchased it on DVD before I ever had a DVD player. The quality of DVD's from that time period were not nearly as good as the current versions.

10 November 2009 - I watched "State of Play" with Russell Crowe and others. I don't like many of his movies. He plays them with an attitude that I really hate. I would rank SOP with Gladiator, which I just purchased on Blu-ray.

2 November 2009 - I ran across "Ice Age - Dawn of The Dinosaurs" on Blu-Ray for $19.95 in WalMart and purchased it. It is really a movie for children; however, if you are into computer graphics, you have to watch it. It isn't as funny to an adult as it is to a kid but it is sill enjoyable. The special features are also important. I also have the first one but not on Blu-Ray.

16 October 2009 - I have been slow adding movies but I haven't really watched any that made me want to review them. I recently watched "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". The Blu-ray was on sale for $19.95 and that was low enough to get my attention. On a scale of 0-5, I would give it a 3. I liked it but I wasn't raving about it.

I rented Sin Nombre today. It is a Spanish language DVD. It is in the vein of Under the Same Moon, but much more gritty. It is mostly about the interaction of some people that are trying to immigrate illegally to the USA. They begin in Southern Mexico and are using Mexican trains to get to the border. One of the people trying to escape from Mexico is a gang member and the violent Mexican gang he belongs to is trying to track him down. I would give it a 4. I was following it and didn't miss the lack of subtitles for stretches.

7 August 2009 - I purchased Push. It was the best that the last couple of weeks could provide, that I would purchase. I rented "Race to Witch Mountain". It was the best of the current lot. Because it was for children by Disney, it was entertaining.

8 July 2009 - I purchased KNOWING starring Nikolas Cage. The movie is ok but Cage always seems to find parts that go over the top. The last section of the movie was just strange. Some people like to watch him for that reason but it makes me cringe at times. I didn't cringe with KNOWING like I did with his National Treasure series. He was over the top in "Gone in 60 Seconds" but I also liked it, especially when he was stealing the Shelby. Now, when it bounced across some vehicles, landed on the road, and kept going, I cringed, but that was only a few seconds of an otherwise enjoyable movie. I must have cringed 10-12 times in each of the National Treasure movies and that was too much.

2 July 2009 - I watched "12 Rounds" starring John Cena. I thought it was better than "The Marine". I also watched "Arranged", which is a mixed culture story of arranged marriages. I thought some of the stuff was over the top in "12 Rounds" but that was expected. The surprise was Arranged. I really didn't expect much but it was a project film and this type of indie can be very good. You had a Muslim woman and an Orthodox Jewish woman going through the trama of having an arranged marriage. They co-taught a school class. Don't get me wrong, I have three ex-es and the parents couldn't do any worse. The ending was predictable but the road there was not. It was a good movie about overcoming biases.

21 June 2009 - I rented "Crossing Over" today. I only stopped the movie to visit "El Baño". Harrison Ford played an ICE agent with too much of a heart. He may have caught illegals but he really worried about them too. The situations bothered me. I enjoyed watching "Under the Same Moon", which was about a son crossing over illegally and finding his illegal mother in LA. It had a feel good ending. Crossing Over didn't have a happy ending.

14 June 2009 - I had "True Crime" sent to me from Netflix. Clint Eastwood plays Steve Everett, a crime reporter, that is implied wins the Pulitzer Prize for saving the life of a convicted murder on death row. His is a more miserable SOB than Kowalski from Gran Torino. His problem is women and telling the truth. He can't do either. Neither True Crime nor Gran Torino can be watched for enjoyment. You have to watch a serious drama unfold and one side win. I don't consider that enjoyment or entertainment.

I gave up on Mar Rojo for awhile. I have watched enough terrible movies for awhile.

10 June 2009 - I purchased "Gran Torino" on Blu-ray and "Mar Rojo" yesterday. Walt Kowalski was played by Clint Eastwood. It has been described as Archie Bunker meets Dirty Harry. I never watched the TV show Archie Bunker, so, I can't really add to the comment other than it was consistent with my opinion. He introduced me to many new racial terms describing Asians. It thought it was more gritty than Dirty Harry, something closer to Unforgiven. Walt's personality was seriously flawed, one of my primary requirements. He hated his Hmong neighbors. The transformation of Walt from a bigoted person into something more reasonable was interesting to watch. Especially since the Hmong's, who hated him back equally, ended up treating him with more respect than his own family did. The ending was not what I expected.

I started to watch Mar Rojo but gave up for the night.

2 June 2009 - I was at a loss for a movie to watch and watched "Defiance". It just didn't sound that good; however, it was much better than I expected. It was another form of Schindler's list but it was the Jewish people doing it on their own. You never hear of them fighting back and they did in Definance. In the special features, you see the descendants of the Bielski brothers and the descendants of the people they saved. It isn't a feel-good movie but it is worth the time to watch.

I slowly ended up watching "New in Town". It was interesting to watch but it simply felt artificial. I am not a real fan of Zellweger. She has played parts in a number of movies that I have enjoyed. She played important parts, she just wasn't one of the stars. FWIW, I didn't like Fargo and I didn't like "New in Town". I would give it 3-stars because I didn't dislike it either and that is the only score that fits.

22 May 2009 - I finished watching Valkyrie staring Tom Cruise. The press was crucifying this movie for months as it was being made. I thought that Cruise gave an excellant performance as Colonel Stauffenberg and the Media people were headline hunting. That is when they report something that you may not find to be true. There may be a number of people that agree with them but it won't change your perception. Regardless, it was an interesting movie about the attempted assination of Adolf Hitler and coup.

12 May 2009 - I purchased "Taken" on Blu-ray. It is another movie about retribution. The "bad guys" kidnap Bryan Mills' (Liam Neeson) daughter. One of the kidnappers picks up his daughter's cell phone and Mills tells them that he doesn't have any money. If they release his daughter right now, he will forget about it but if they don't he has some very special skills and will track them down and kill them. The bad-guy says "Good luck". I enjoyed the movie and was glad that I bought it on Blu-ray.

5 April 2005 - The latest releases were 7 Pounds starring Will Smith and Slumdog Millionare. I had to compare 7 Pound to Grizzly Man. I have trouble watching suicidal people because it isn't enjoyment. Slumdog Millionare was actually entertaining. Watching how the kids grew up and developed made the movie entertaining.

26 March 2009 - I purchased the latest James Bond flick called Quantum of Solace. I thought it looked really good in Blu-ray. The movie was also interesting. The weapons got a little overboard but I don't find that distracting. Olga must have increased by heart rate by at least 10-20 bps. She is the first Bond Girl that I like better than Halle Berry.

21 March 2009 - Here it is the 1st day of spring and, it is raining here in the desert, and I am watching it rain in Forks, Washington via a Blu-ray version of Twilight. If the movie wasn't interesting, it would be very depressing. I have friends who had problems with the cgi in Catwoman and if they had problems with her running around the room, they are going to have real problems with Edward, the vampire, carrying Bella, the mortal, up an old growth tree.

The first thing it made me think about was a story my father told of working in Yellowstone during the depression. He had a tree picked out that he thought he could climb to get away from an agressive black bear. One morning, he flipped open the flap on his tent, scared the crap out of a bear that was really close, and it went up his pine tree just about as fast as Edward had. His idea of climbing the tree to get away from a bear was immediately dropped.

Earlier this week, I watched "Punisher: War Zone". I purchased it on Blu-ray. I liked the movie. I don't have any problem watching a comic book person come to life in a movie.

4 March 2009 - I just finished "In the Electronic Mist". I really didn't enjoy this movie but I couldn't stop watching it. Tommy Lee Jones, of late, has been in some pretty miserable movies. I don't think anyone could portray his characters with equal intensity. I just didn't enjoy them because I wasn't entertained. The recent, earlier movies were "In the Valley of Elah", "No Country For Old Men", "A Prairie Home Companion", and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada". I haven't seen "A Prairie Home Companion" and thought that "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" was the best of the bunch. Watching Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) develop Stockholm Syndrome made it more interesting.

The psycopath played by Javier Bardem was the only person in "No Country For Old Men" that didn't sound senile. I prefer movies with flawed personalities, which was true in all of these movies, but they didn't redeem themselves for an ending, which left the parts severely flawed. The voters only gave "In the Electronic Mist" a 6.0 on IMDb, which was the only one of them rated less than 7.0. I prefered movies such as "The Missing" and "The Hunted".

19 February 2009 - I watched "Body of Lies" and have to admit that this it was one of the better movies that I have watched lately. It received 4-stars with an even spread of people rating it between 3-stars and 5-stars on Amazon and a 7.4 of 10 on IMDb. I think their average ratings were consistant with what I would give it. The last new movies that I really enjoyed were Ironman and 10,000 BC back in October. The difference between liking them and Crash is that I also purchased them on BluRay. I agreed with Ferris (DiCaprio) falling for the Iranian nurse. Hoffman (Crowe) was one of the people that the audience would have hissed at in the days of the silent movies. I also didn't think his Southern accent was done that well.

I also watched "Logan's War: Bound by Honor", which is a movie that includes Chuck Norris. Is a revenge movie and is much better than some of the CN movies such as "The President's Man: A line in the Sand". A 5.0 versus a 4.0 isn't much of a rating but that is all they got by IMDb users. Logan's War was made in 1998 and The President's Man was made in 2002. Both were made for TV movies, which explains why I had never seen them before. FWIW, I didn't finish The President's Man.

15 February 2009 - I have been lazy again. I will have to split this up into two sections. The ones I finished and the ones I didn't. I finished Wanted, Eagle Eye, Appaloosa, Death Race, Miracle at St. Anna, Righteous Kill, and Bangkok Dangerous. The best part of Wanted was watching a body double of Angelina Jolie getting out of the water with the dragon tatoo on her back. The rest of the ones that I finished didn't have anything to catch your attention.

There were other movies that I watched and I will have to take a notepad with me when I go to Hastings. I sort of enjoyed Eagle Eye and Righteous Kill. Miracle at St. Anna was a little bit strange to me but that is also consistant with my opinion of other Spike Lee movies.

The ones I didn't finish.

Burn After Reading, Max Payne, and Tropic Thunder didn't meet my minimum of something entertaining. I don't have a wide tolerance range for watching movies. All I demand is that they entertain me and they all failed to meet this criteria. There was so much swearing in TT, that the teenagers who had heard that it was cool and rented it for Christmas Eve got embarassed and ejected it to watch something else.

25 December 2008 - I messed up big time. I didn't get into Hastings until after 7 pm and Death Race was gone. I ended up watching "Linewatch" staring Cuba Gooding Jr. I like what he does in the movies that I have watched but he doesn't do many movies that grab my attention. I started out thinking that it went over the edge at the end. That isn't to say that I didn't think that it was justice served.

I watched "Crash" because it was a Don Cheadle film after watching Cheadle in "Traitor". It simply bothered me. I never watch this type of movie if I know about the plot ahead of time. I think the racial discrimination was what bothered me the most. I think that the cop running his hands over Karina Arroyave's body under her cocktail dress bothered me the most. Her husband understood that he had to stand by doing nothing because doing something would have simply made it much worse.Terence Howard played her husband. After Elizabeth reemed a new orfice in her husband for basically being a coward in her eyes, he suddenly became suicidal. To have Elizabeth saved from a firey death by the cop that had violated her earlier was a vindication of the cop. It reminded me of a form of redemption for the cop. It is no wonder that the viewer's rated Crash at 8.1 on IMDb. There are so many twists and turns that make you think. It is a really good movie.

18 December 2008 - I have watched a few new movies. The movie, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" was the movie I expected to like the best. It wasn't. When I visited IMDb, they had it as a 5.2 but I thought it was lucky to be that high. On the other hand, I am not a Don Cheadle fan and didn't have any intention to watch "The Traitor". I didn't feel like reading a book, which I did anyway, and decided to also watch Cheadle's movie. I may have liked it even better than "The Dark Knight". I am not sure where "The Chronicals of Narnia: Prince Caspian" falls. I purchased both "The Dark Knight" and "Prince Caspian" on Blu-ray. I have no intention of buying "The Mummy". I liked "Prince Caspian" better than "Wanted" although the sight of the faux tatoo on Jolie's back when she got out of the water was sufficient reason to watch Wanted.

I have both versions of "The Chronicals of Narnia" on Blu-ray. I even purchased both the English and the Spanish versions of C. S. Lewis' book.

1 December 2008 - I watched "Hancock" starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron. I think that Charlize is the next most beautiful actress in Hollywood after Halle Berry. I liked Hancock but wasn't crazy about it. I enjoyed it better than "I Am Legend". I guess I could deal with the silly special effects on Hancock better than the ones on "I Am Legend". The monsters had the tendancy to creep me out. My rating is that I will watch it twice and the 2nd time will be on BluRay DVD or HD off of my satelite dish but I won't purchase it.

10 October 2008 - There have not been many movies that deserved to be discussed. There are exceptions. I liked "Iron Man" and "10,000 BC" very much. I liked them enough that after renting them, I went back and purchased the BluRay DVDs. There were movies such as "The Visitor" that kept my interest but many others that just don't deserve to be mentioned.. I have come across good prices on some BluRay versions of old movies that I like but they also don't deserve to be discussed.

27 July 2008 - I had a lot better luck with "The Man From Earth". I hate discussions and the whole movie was about a professor that was leaving, telling his lifes story. When he admits that he is immortal and is 14,000 years old, the movie gets a little bit strange. It wasn't so strange that I stopped it, got up and walked around but it was strange because it yanked the cords of his friends basic beliefs. Some reacted better than others and that was half of the entertainment.

19 July 2008 - I rented "The Ruins" but didn't finish it. The stupidity coefficient was too high. When the locals pointed guns at the kids and the girl started taking pictures with her camera, I muttered "stupid bitch" and a little bit later, after one of the kids was hit with an arrow and also shot, I hit the stop button. I continued playing the movie latter but when things were pulled out of the mouth of one of them, I decided that enough was enough and ejected the movie. I needed to get it back to Hastings to get the $2.00 off and thought that wasting more time on a movie I wasn't enjoying was a waste of my time.

7 July 2008 - I rented "Anatema", which is a movie about a woman in war torn Kosov. It has a 5 vote rating of 7.8 on IMDb but there isn't much of a synopsis. Personally, it was a movie that I just couldn't finish. The stupidity level was too high. The main character is a worman who is raped, is made pregnant, and keeps the baby. Stupid theme #1. The whole character of the American photographer, "David Swartz" is stupid theme #2. I must have made it about 2/3 through when I uttered some truly nasty words and hit the eject button. By getting it back early, Hastings knocks $2 off my next rental. So, Anatema only cost me $1.99.

4 July 2008 - I watched "10,000 BC" and "The Spiderwick Chronicles" recently. I waited to rent 10,000 BC because there were so many bad reviews. When I wrote this, it only had a 4.9 rating on IMDb. The main complaints were the acting and historical information. For what it is worth, it didn't miss history nearly as bad as the 1954 movie, (Sitting Bull), did. It has Sitting Bull leaving Canada to come back into the USA to rescue a soldier that helped him escape. In the real world, Sitting Bull fled to Canada in 1876 and didn't return until 1881. If a soldier had helped him escape and was to be executed for treason, he would have been dead a long time by 1881. For the most part, I actually enjoyed watching 10,000 BC. It entertained me and I don't ask for anything more from a Movie.

I didn't like "The Spiderwick Chronicles" that much. The two characters that Freddie Highmore played were over the top and I cringed at the dialog at times. Now, he wasn't mouthy enough for me to cheer if one of the nasty critters had grabbed him but it would have been close. I had actually thought of buying it in Blu-Ray but a $1.99 rental saved me from that blunder. The viewers have given it a 7.0 on IMDb, so, that means that were a lot more people that enjoyed it than didn't. I would have tended to give it a high 5 or low 6.

21 June 2008 - After watching "Under The Same Moon", I went to Amazon.com and read the reviews. One seemed to be particularly bad and compared it to "August Rush", which he thought was better movie. I went back to Hastings and rented it. After watching it, I had to agree that "August Rush" was a better movie but I would bet that the Hispanic community around here knows Carlitos and they have never met an August Rush. I was curious enough and did a Google search on "august rush" and after reading a number of reviews, I decided that the the best review I had read was at rogerebert.com. He hit all of the points that made it enjoyable to me personally. It seemed to be something people enjoyed or they hated it. He only gave it *** but thought it was a movie kids would enjoy. I am a long way from being a kid and I also enjoyed it.

19 June 2008 -  I only found one movie released on 17 June 2008 that I was interested in. It was called "Under The Same Moon (La misma luna)". The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles available. It was about a mother that had emigrated illegally to the US and left her son with her mother. The grandmother dies and the boy takes off to find his mother in the USA. There was an interesting appearance by "Los Tigres del Norte" who picked up the boy and his grumpy, unwilling companion. They wrote a song that they sang for Carlistos in the movie as they were driving down the road to a gig in Arizona. I really enjoyed the movie. I loaned it to some Hispanic friends and they all cried at both the happy spots and the sad spots. I have all of LTdN's recent CDs and I was disappointed that the song wasn't on one of their CDs.

I also purchased "Al Otro Lado" with "Under The Same Moon" because one of the actors was Adrian Alonso. It was not nearly as enjoyable as UTSM. The story has 3 independant plots, something I really do not like because of the disruptions to each story. In the first pass, I only made it to where Fatima, the Moroccan girl, was led to the hold of a ship containing a number of children. The first thing that came to mind was that instead of getting to the other side, she was going to be sold into prostitution or something equally bad. I wasn't in the mood to watch something like that and hit the stop button and killed the movie. That didn't happen but the movie was not satisfying. The ending left nothing basically changed. It was not a movie you would watch for enjoyment.

The movie Jumper was released on 10 June 2008. I watched it once straight through. That is a clue as to whether I like it or not. I decided that I liked it enough to buy it on Blu-Ray. I liked the original book called Jumper better than the one about Griffin. Samuel Jackson made an awesome paladin.

3 June 2008 - I have some changes. I liked Rambo 4 so well that I bought it and 1-3 on Blu-Ray. Hastings had a $12.97 off if you purchased all 4 movies. That dropped the price of each to under $14. Not too much later I found Stargate SG1 on sale at Wal Mart for $14.96. It is much cooler in HD. The BD version was the extended cut, which I hadn't watched. I also purchased "The Punisher" on BD for the same prices as SG1.

I have 5 or 6 movies that I really like. In no particular order, they are: Blade Runner, The Quick and The Dead (Sam Elliot's version), Stargate SG1, The Dancer Upstairs, Code Name: Dancer, and Final Countdown. I have some of them on Blu-Ray and have no hope for the rest. I have a second level but there are so many movies in that list that they are impossible to enumerate.

28 May 2008 - I watched "Rambo 4" last night. I have an HDTV and watch from 2 positions. One is a reclining chair about 15 feet away from the TV. If the movie is really good, I have been known to get a ice cooler and sit much closer to the TV. I was sitting on the cooler when I watched Rambo. Watching the "special features" was interesting because some people claimed that as bloody as Rambo is, it is less than in tight combat.

This time, what makes it special, is that Rambo starts out as a really flawed character and he redeems himself at the end. Stalone said that he directed it as if Rambo was directing it, which made it pretty gritty. It obviously made the Myanmar regime unhappy because in the special features they say that selling it can be fatal.

29 April 2008 - I have been preoccupied with learning Spanish and have neglected adding new movies. Only 2 of them really ranked high in my mind and they are "Charlie Wilson's War" and "The Brave One". I thought Cloverfield was so bad that it came close to being added to my "Really Terrible Movies" list. Some people that I know really liked Cloverfield but to me it was so strange that it was almost funny. "I Am Legend" was pretty good but it didn't make it to the really great category. I was thinking about buying it as Blu-Ray and rented the Blu-Ray. I decided that seeing it twice was enough. After HD died, the Blu-Ray people have gotten greedy and think a Blu-Ray is worth $35. I don't think any movie on Blu-Ray is worth more than $24.99. So, I haven't been buying at lot of Blu-Ray. This lets me save money and travel to Mexico. I was looking at the current releases and almost went into shock when I saw they wanted $39.98 for "The Golden Compass" on Blu-Ray.

29 December 2007 - I watched "Eastern Promises" last night. It had Vigo Mortensen as an undercover agent in the Russian Mafia. It was a really weird movie to watch. It isn't a movie you watch for enjoyment but you can't stop it once you start playing it.

22 December 2007 - I purchased an HD DVD of "The Kingdom" because of the trailer. Jamie Foxx is an actor, that to me personally, hits most of his parts. I didn't think of him as an actor until he starred with Tom Cruise in Collateral. He played a kind of dumb cab driver caught up in Cruise's hit mission. The next movie I watched was "Stealth" and he was kind of an over the top as a pilot of a cool airplane. Jessica Biel had the advantage there. In "The Kingdom", he is an FBI agent with an agenda of finding out who killed a friend in a Kingdom that resembles Saudi Arabia. An American investigative team is not going to be allowed to do anything but they show up and produce results. The are so many scenes that will keep you riveted in your chair but the car bomb scene on the freeway and the final shoot out are awesome, simply awesome.

10 December 2007 - I rented "Battlestar Galactica: Razor". I have had problems watching the series but Razor was susposed to be a gritty story of the Pegasus before it encountered Galactica. It was an interesting background story for the series.

2 December 2007 - I don't remember ever watching Glen Ford in "The 3:10 to Yuma". He was an actor that played a variety of parts flawlessly. I liked his westerns where he played really slick gunfighters. Superman and Spiderman were disappointing to me because he played a meek old man. Van Heflin plays the part of Dan Evans, a man hired to take Ben Wade (Glen Ford) to Yuma. The interaction between Wade and Evans made it an interesting movie to watch.

I have been watching some previously released movies in HD. I have a new Toshiba HD-A3 DVD player. I have a Sony HD TV that does 720p or 1080i and the A3 supports those resolutions. It was also on sale for $199 and came with 7 HD DVDs. I was really going to buy a Blu-Ray but they are another $200 more.

The African scenery in "Blood Diamonds" was interesting. "The Unforgiven" came in a package. A scruffy Clint Eastwood playing an aging gunfighter that couldn't hit the side of a barn with anything other than a shotgun is still scruffy gunfighter whether it is DVD or HD. "Bourne Identity" is another that better detail doesn't improve the movie. The menu options are significantly better on HD but I am not sure that is a sufficient reason to watch these moves.

I keep going by the Blu-Ray demonstration in Best Buy and "The Kingdom of Heaven" is much more awesome in HD but it is only available in Blu-Ray. I have wanted to watch 2001, A Space Odessy, but haven't seen a copy of it lately. When Bourne Ultimatum is released, you can safely bet that I will buy the HD version. I had to rent Transformers to see if I made a mistake in buying the regular version. The best deal on it was more than my pain threshold, so, I don't feel bad having a regular DVD version of Transformers.

23 November 2007 - I rented "Beat The Drum". I was a little off on my concept of what the movie was about. I have liked African drums and harmony since I was around 20 years old. That was a long, long time ago. Wondering about this mysterious illness that was killing the village also caught my attention. Following Musa as he developed an insight that had bypassed the elders was interesting. I don't know if the truth would set them free but it certainly changed their future.

22 November 2007 - I bought "Live Free or Die Hard". Lots of action. It has the typical unbelievable code breaking hackers. The introduction of the F-35 was interesting. There is a long list of errors on IMDb. It was still an interesting movie to watch.

16 November 2007 - I rented "Amazing Grace". It is about William Wilberforce and his effort to banish the slave trade in England. The common feeling was that to banish slave trading will make the British Empire collapse. This created enormous pressures to maintain status quo. Opposition to this concept could be considered sedition and etc. Watching them move forward to the vote was both boring and anxious. It isn't a movie for enjoyment but more for enlightenment. Watching the bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace" as they single step up to the rest of the military band was an emotional moment.

15 November 2007 - I rented "Urban Justice" by Steven Segal. One person rated it as being his best film since "Fire Down Below". I think I have to agree with that. There is excessive swearing but that is probably typical for the environment. The excessive violence goes with the territory. I figured something was different because the local video store had more than one copy.

13 November 2007 - I purchased 2 DVDs today. They are Avenging Angel staring Kevin Sorbo and Shakira's "Oral Fixation Tour". I would occasionally catch Sorbo in Andromeda and Hercules. I didn't realize how tall he was until he did the "Walking Tall" series. They caught my attention and I rented them. I thought they were much more realistic than the one done by "The Rock". Of course, Dwayne Johnson's specialty is comedic stunt action. In the "Avenging Angel", Sorbo is a preacher that offers sanctuary to some people run off of a farming claim by the greedy rancher. Men sent by the rancher chase them down and kill them. In the process, the Preachers wife and daughter are also killed. Sorbo's part turns from preaching to being a bounty hunter. He has a pretty miserable life at that point but he ends up back in the town where he lost everything and decides to take on the greedy rancher and the corrupt Sheriff. In the scene where he confronts the Sheriff, he calls him "baby killer". It is another one of the flawed personality to redemption plots that I like so well.

Shakira's "Oral Fixation Tour" DVD really surprised me. I have moved away from listening to her CDs because, for me, she is hard to understand. Still, I own all of her CDs. She is one of my original artists that sing in Spanish. Around the middle of the show, Shakira does this song (No) where she dances in a red dress that will blow you away. I was trying to work in the kitchen and listening while I worked. The sounds made me think something was going on and I stepped into the living room where my HDTV is located and all I could see was this spinning and undulating red thing. I seem to remember invoking one of the dieties and stood there with my mouth open in shock. Then, she does a belly dance to "Whenever, Wherever" and goes out into the crowd. The mic is live and it is wild.

I remember watching some of her music videos when she first became popular. Univision had a show called "Exitos de Onda Max" that I left turned on the TV while I worked. It was mostly music videos. For Shakira, the music would pull me in and the video would drive me back into the computer room. You will not do that with this DVD. It is also obvious for anyone that has watched her perform that she has someone arranging her dancing because she is a much, much better dancer.

8 August 2007 - I finished watching Pathfinder and then, I watched the 2-DVD version of "Red Dawn". Pathfinder was a little much for me. The violence was probably characteristic of a Viking attach but that doesn't mean it is entertainment. Red Dawn was Red Dawn. I think it was as realistic as a partisan style guerilla war being waged in the USA could be. The Wolverines were teenagers. They started out being lucky. They were being taught how to fight by soldiers as the movie was being made, which made them look the part, as the plot developed.

26 July 2007 - I finally watched a really interesting movie, at least to me. It is called "Nomad - The Warrior". It is a historical epic movie about the Kazakh legend that one individual would gather the tribes into one nation in the 18th century. It became Kazakhstan. You have people that descend from Genghis Kahn. In the final battle, you have nomads with arrows, spears, and swords fighting against canons. I really enjoyed it.

You can watch it in Kazakh with subtitles or English. Personally, it seemed inapropriate to watch it in English, at least the first time I watched it.

13 June 2007 - I bought "Ghost Rider" and rented "Breach". The IMDb rating for GR was only 5.5 and I thought that I was going to have problems watching the comic strip character movie and wanted one in hand that was less trouble. It turned out that I had no problem enjoying GR and had actually stopped Breach to watch GR. I have read some of the user reviews and have come to the conclusion that most people have problems with movies made about comic strip characters. It is a comic and I don't expect life like cgi. Breach, on the other hand, was rated around 7.4 and it made me squirm to watch. I eventually finished it but it took awhile.

10 June 2007 - I taped and watched "Sor Tequila". It is another "La India María" movie. She plays a Catholic nun who is constantly getting into trouble. It is all slapstick humour. It is in Spanish but doesn't have subtitles.

9 June 2007 - I was desperate and watched a movie called "Crooked". In retrospect, it was one pretty girl and a bunch of fading stars. You have Don Wilson and Olivier Gruner being the only 2 honest cops. You have to see the whole list of actors on IMDb where it is called "Soft Target". It was much more enjoyable than I expected. First of all, Hastings only had 1 DVD. That means it was not anticipated that it would have a high call for renting. I called it a 1-star. Well, it has a 2.8 rating on a scale of 10 on IMDb and that would make it a 1.4 on a scale of 5.

30 May 2007 - There are a number of movies about "La India María". The first one I watched part of was "Tonta, Tonta pero no tanta" or maybe "Dumb, dumb but no so much". María is played by María Elena Velasco. You have an Indian woman from the montains going into the big city where even crossing the street can be life threatening. Her primary mode of travel is a burro and you can imagine the slapstick humor that can develop. For example, what all can happen if you have María in the driver's seat of a pickup and it starts rolling downhill. The Spanish is simple; however, you probably need to be Méxicano to appreciate the humor. Even being raised by Méxicano parents may not be sufficient to appreciate the humor. The movies are still funny. You just won´t be rolling on the floor laughing so hard that you are crying. Individual shows are all reviewed as "La India María" in Spanish Cinema.

23 May 2007 - I was awed last night by Apocalypto and Letters From Iwo Jima. For the first time this year, I have 4 movies that went beyond the norm and provided me with entertainment. It has been a long dry spell waiting for a real hit. Apocalypto in Drama Movies.

20 May 2007 - I have watched several movies that I have not commented on. "The King", which stars William Hurt and Gael García Bernal. Bernal has a tendancy to appear in quirky kinds of movies. In the end, I clicked forward several times because I just couldn't sit and watch the scene.

Pan's Labyrinth was a much better movie. It kept me on the edge of my chair almost all of the time. Reviewed in Spanish Cinema.

Seraphim Falls also did that. Neesen's part was kind of like a badger that wouldn't let go. Brosnan, on the other hand, was pretty adept at getting away but never by much. It was also kind of funny to listen to 2 Irish boys talk with a western accent. That isn't too far from reality because many of the early emigrants were Scot-Irish. I have been thinking about this movie and decided in humor that it was (Badger Boy against Wolverine). Badger Boy was the name of an Indian warrior from an old Western book. He was called that because he wouldn't back off. There is a movie about a spec-ops warrior that was called Wolverine for the same reason. Combining the two had a ring to it and seemed appropriate.

9 May 2007 - I watched "Music and Lyrics". I only watched it because one of the reviewers on IMDb said that it was much better than the average ratings. I had to agree. I watched it in one setting. Much later, I found a previously rented version and bought the movie.

8 May 2007 - I watched "10 Items or Less" last night. Well, that isn't completely true because I skipped to the next bookmark several times. I would have never finished it if I hadn't. I happen to like to watch Paz Vega and Morgan Freeman. Unfortunately, this isn't a movie that you should make a real effort to find.

28 April 2007 - I watched the Spanish telenovela "Pasión de Gavilanes". It was interesting and dumb all at the same time. You have 3 brothers that want revenge after their sister is wronged and she commits suicide. Their targets are the 3 Elizondo sisters. More in Spanish cinema.

I also watched Déjà Vu and .45. Déjà Vu was by far the most interesting show that I have watched in the last 2 or 3 weeks. It provided me with much more entertainment than "The Last King of Scotland" did. I am always leary of movies staring Denzel Washington. He played whinners so long that I have a misplaced, bad image of him similar to my opinion of Sean Penn prior to watching "The Interpreter". More in Action cinema.

The movie ".45", on the other hand, was just totally strange. Watching some co-dependant woman being abused was not enjoyment, although, watching her get revenge gave it some redeeming value. I hate manipulating people and she manipulated everyone she knew in order to get revenge. Finding out who finally set that up made the movie enteresting enough to finish. Reviewed in Action cinema.

19 April 2007 - I have watched several new movies. They are El Aura, Bendito Infierno, Mi Mejor Enemigo, and The Last King Of Scotland. I had problems finishing all of them. El Aura is reviewed in Spanish Cimema and so are Bendito Infierno, and Mi Mejor Enemigo.

The Last King of Scotland is reviewed in Drama.

11 April 2007 - I purchased "Buscando a Leti". It didn't have any awards but it had both English and Spanish subtitles. The DVD has "Searching for Leti" as an English title. It is about a disfunctional family separated by immigration to the United States (EE.UU). A racist grandmother left in charge of the children made for miserable times for Leti. Dealing with life was the search. Reviewed in Spanish Cinema.

I finally finished Volver tonight. It was better than I thought it would be. It had too many layers of complexity. It also had a lot of comedy involved. A non-talking Russian that likes to watch Spanish TV is a good example of things that were put over people in the movie. Reviewed in Spanish Cinema.

1 April 2007 - I saw a really strange movie tonight because Hugh Jackman was in it. It was called "The Rat Tamer". He was damaged between when he was arrested and he showed up at the prison. Because of the beatings and what ever, he was not functional mentally. One of the guards held him responsible for his mates death. The guard was border line insane. It was a vicious circle until the final scene.

30 March 2007 I rented Pursuit of Happiness and Children of Men. Children of Men was really strange. The primary actor was Clive Owens. He typically plays quirky parts and this was one of them. The premise was that mankind had become infertile and he is asked to take a pregnant girl to a shelter. Owens part dies waiting for a ship to take them to a refuge shelter and you don't really have an ending.

Pursuit of Happiness had a good rating but I simply could not get interested in the story. I watched about 1.25 hours and ran out of rental time and took it back.

29 March 2007 - I purchased "Happy Feet". So far, I have only watched it in Spanish. That is not really a good way to watch this movie. The songs are all in English and the speech is in Spanish. You feel like you have the wrong movie.

28 March - I was in Best Buy and saw the movie "De Nadie". It had a list of awards on the back cover but the text is so small the I really couldn't read them. We have a large percentage of Hispanic people that live locally. Many are supposed to be illegal. Most of the Hispanic people I know are from Mexico but I have met people from Mexico to Chile and Argentina. I don't understand the drive to get here. So, the trials and tribulations of people trying to get into the US illegally are of interest. Reviewed in Spanish Cinema.

27 March 2007 - I have been slow updating this blog again. The movie I enjoyed the most in this timeframe was Eragon. It was aimed at teenagers but anyone that loves to read fantasy fiction will like Paolini's trilogy. I watched it once to enjoy the movie and then, I watched it to see what the Spanish version was like. The Spanish subtitles do not follow the audio track. What happened to the Spanish script?

The next most interesting was Blood Diamond. You have Dicaprio playing a hustler, thief, or whatever trying to find a pink diamond. He finds it and gets involved with getting it to market. A pretty reporter follows the diamond to the end. It was enlightening to watch. More in Action Cinema.

I also watched "The Departed" but it was not nearly as interesting for me as the others.

22 February 2007 - I watched Babel yesterday. I was glad that I rented it and didn't purchase it. It was too involved for my taste. It was typical Iñárritu in that the individual stories were all related. I watched it in one setting, which places it into my special rating.

I liked Flags of our fathers much better. FOOF appeared to be much more realistic than the John Wayne version of the capture of Iwo Jima. "Sands of Iwo Jima" was the name of the "John Wayne" movie. When it was filmed, the Duke was full of action and always died at the end. The sergeant in FOOF also died. He just wasn't the main character in the movie. Sarge was played by Barry Pepper and he always does a good job.

3 February 2007 - I was watching a movie that I purchased a long time ago. It is a rescue drama called "Lost In The Wild". It is about some Air Medicine people that run a clinic in Mexico. On a flight down, one of the planes developes engine trouble and crashes in the Jungle. The drama is about rescuing the people in the plane, fighting the bueracracy, and arranging for a jet medivac. Because of the drug problems, planes do not have clearance to fly at night but the air rescue jet from San Diego can not get there before dark. I had the Spanish subtitles turned on because the Spanish is simple except when they are dealing with the medical emergancy. One of the bloopers involved Rosie, who was played by Jennifer Lopez. She tells José that her father comes from Oaxaca but the subtitle had Guajaca. IMDb had a weighted average of 4.3 but I think that it is was much more interesting that that.

28 January 2007 - I made my walk through of Hastings and here is a list of the movies that I have been very slow to review. They are: Archangel, Backlash, Attack Force, Blackbeard, Broken Bridges, End of The Spear, An Inconvienent Truth, The Matador, The Russian Specialist, Second In Command. I will add more later. Of this list, I could not finish Attack Force, and The Matador. A lot of people liked Matador. Since it was loaned to me by my neighbor, I didn't feel bad ejecting the DVD.

I have a hard time dealing with Al Gore, so, the fact I watched the movie and finished it is important. Some of the satelite channels on DirecTV have documentaries where someone says something and then they chop it up in to little segments and you don't know if they were for the title or against it but the cons had been cut out. I expected An Inconvienent Truth to be cut up like the others but it was not and it was fairly coherent. Not too long ago, Michael Crichton said that Gore had it wrong. It was within days that I read "State of Fear" by Crichton. Crichton has data from an official site that shows an temperature oscilation after 1880 and 1960. Shortly after his book was published, the data was truncated to only show the current rise. That makes me suspicious. Was it inconvienent data that conviently disappeared.

I thought the two best movies were End of The Spear and Broken Bridges. There were troubled people that came together and a reconciliation occured at the end. End of The Spear was about missionaries that were killed by the tribe they visited. Later, the son of one of the missionaries becomes a friend of one of the killers. For an ending, he took the son to where they had killed his father. This is the kind of movie I really like.

Broken Bridges is about a country singer at the end of his trail. The next step down is oblivion but he goes home and meets the daughter he never knew he had. She reinvigorates him. The singing is really good. A flawed person is redeemed at the end.

Next came Archangel and Second in Command. In Archangel, a British Professor was investigating the life of Joseph Stalin and there were a lot of people that were still staying out of the reach of the public.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was appointed 2nd in command in the US Embassy in an Eastern European nation. The military started to overthrow the legal government and the task of stopping them fell on the part played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. I thought it was one of his better movies.

The woman starring in Backlash would get the crap kicked out of her by much larger men and then get up and come at them again. Come on, get real. She would probably have broken bones and would need help to just get up. I thought Blackbeard had potential but never got started. I did finish it and that gives it a few points. The Russian Specialist was watched too long ago to be fair. I remember watching the whole movie but I can't remember how far above 5 out of 10 I went or how far below.

27 January 2007 - Last night, I watched "Green Street Hooligans". The people at Hastings had told me on numerous occasions to watch it but it was never in when I went past it in the racks. It was an interesting movie because an American, who had unfairly been kicked out of Harvard as a drug dealer, ended up in the underground hooligan group on Green Street called the "Green Street Elite". The hooligans are rabid fans of football (European style). The story goes along way towards explaining how the violence we read about happens around football (soccer). After being involved in fighting and developing a rep, talking on the lying rich kid was a snap. It made a good ending.

23 January 2007 - The Guardians was released today and I bought a copy. This is one of those feel good movies where raw people are trained to be Coast Guard rescue people. It just didn't leave me feeling good. It is full of the old dog trying to stay ahead of the new dog. You have Kevin Costner playing the old dog and Ashton Kutcher playing the new dog. The battle of wits between OD and ND leave a lot of mental bodies on the side of the training pool. It really about US Coast Guard rescue people. They are the people that drop from helicopters onto the deck of a sinking ship or into the ocean to rescue people. At one point, Fischer (Kutcher) asks Randal (Costner) what his number was and was told 22. Fischer asked if that is the number of people he rescued and he is basically told, "No, that is the number I lost. The rest don't count".

9 January 2007 - I watched Bandidas, which starred Penelope Cruz and Selma Hayak as Robin Hood style bank robbers. It was kind of interesting to watch because they keep bumbling along and keep winning against all odds.

11 December 2006 - I have watched some movies that I thought were really bad. One had a 4.0 rating on IMDb. Tonight, I decided to go for one that looked good. It was epic Canadian and I have not had very good luck with Canadian movies lately. The movie, "Battle of the Brave", was to prove an exception. The reviews on both Amazon and IMDb were all extremes. You liked it and it was a 5-* or you hated it and could only give it 1-*. It was almost like a Romeo and Juliet but involved intrique around the time the British fought the French for control of Quebec. This time it was a trapper and a peasant worman. I thought it was a much better movie than the ratings. It lasted 2:25 minutes and I sat and watched it from start to finish. I don't usually do that. So, it had to be 4 of 5-*.

17 November 2006 - I had watched "The Da Vinci Code" in a theater at Kelowna, BC. I had read the book several times but still found the movie to be very interesting. It was released on DVD on the 14th and of course, I had to buy it. With the Clancy books, you always think they left something important out. They also left out many scenes in this movie but at the same time they seemed to enhance the viewing experience.

1 October 2006 - I rented the movie based on the Louis L'Amour story called "Shaughnessy, The Iron Marshal". You can not even find it in IMDb. It has all of the elements I like. The main character had a serious flawed characted and had redeemed himself by the end of the movie. The problem was it didn't help. It was sort of like drinking one of the "Ultra Light" beers. I think they taste more like bad water than beer. At first, I was going to call it a terrible move but on reflection, it wasn't that bad. I have a page for truly terrible movies and Shaughnessy was a longs ways from deserving to be added to that list. I watched it all of the way though in almost one sitting. I just wasn't satisfied when I got through. Everyone on Amazon gave it 5-*'s. For me to give it 5-*'s, it would have to be as good as "The Sacketts", Hondo, "The Crossfire Trail", or "The Quick and the Dead". It is hard to find a copy of "The Quick and the Dead". It starred Sam Elliott and not Sharon Stone. Shaughnessy was a long way from being comparable to the short list of LL movies and I use them as my criteria for a "good" Louis L'Amour movie.

25 September 2006 - I purchased "Dark Kingdom - The Dragon King" several days ago. I had to stop a couple of times. I read where the original story was the basis for Lord of the Rings". People only gave it a 6.4 on IMDb but I think it was better than that. It was another of those "days of different Gods" that took you back to Conan The Barbarian and stories about other mystical warriors. I would have to compare it to Schwarzenegger's Conan but Benno Fürmann is a better actor and they had a better production. He just didn't have the muscles from the Conan book covers. It was also much different than LOR because LOR was first written as bedtimes stories for Tokien's grandchildren. Dark Kingdom was not a bedtime story.

30 August 2006 - I watched "Take The Lead". It was a story about Pierre Dulaine's introduction of ballroom dancing to a bunch of students in detention. The part of Dulaine was played by Antonio Banderas. Dulaine thought dancing was a means to give them self respect and deal with other issues, which might keep them out of trouble. For example, when he matched the students up as pairs, he went on size. This forced them to deal with any predjudices. In the movie, you watched them develop skills and then compete in a ballroom dancing competition. It was a very good story. Imdb has a user rating of 6.4 but I would score it much higher. It also starred Rob Brown who was the awesome walk-on that did such a good job in "Finding Forrester".

17 August 2006 - I watched "An Unfinished Life". It was a complex story. You have 3 people with serious problems. One man lost his son (Rober Redford) and the other (Morgan Freeman) was severely mauled by a grizzly bear. A daughter in-law (Jennifer Lopez) with a daughter that had never met her grandfather. He blamed her for his sons death in an automobile accident. She also blamed herself, which led her into abusive relationships. For Lopez, it was a lot like "Enough", which I enjoyed. All of them coming to grips with their current situations and accepting life as it had been dealt to them made the movie worth watching.

2 August 2006 - I watched "V for Vendetta" tonight. I was told that I would really like it and they were close. It kept my attention for approximately 2.5 hours. When I succeed in watching a movie that quickly, it had my attention and that meant that it was interesting.

26 July 2006 - I watched Aquamarine. I was desparate for a movie and one of the clerks at Hastings thought it was good.but a little bit silly. He was right. I would have eventually rented it because of the spot in the trailer where the mermaid flips her tail out of the water and freaks the girls out. I was about 50 years too old to completely enjoy it.

18 July 2006 - I watched "Miracle at Sage Creek". It was supposed to be a feel good, family Western that the stars included Irene Bedard, David Caradine, and Wes Studi. I don't always like the movies that Caradine stars in but I have yet to watch a movie by Bedard or Studi that didn't have redeeming virtues. With 2 out of 3, how could I miss. As it turned out, Caradine was my person with the flawed personality that was converted into someone good. In the end, the movie fit my pattern of what I typically enjoy watching.

2 July 2006 - I took back "Fun With Dick and Jane". I had never hit the next button on the DVD player so many times just to skip a bookmark forward to let me finish a movie. The ending was interesting but I couldn't deal with much of the plot until the ending.

Then, I rented "16 Blocks". I couldn't watch it straight through; however, it is 1:26 am and I finished it on the same night as I started. When I have real problems with a movie, I may require 5-10 starts before I can finish the movie. This translates into 5 or 6 days of elapsed time. This time it is Bruce Willis that plays a seriously flawed character that redeems himself at the end. I could not give it a high rating but it was much more interesting to watch than any rating would indicate.

30 June 2006 - I rented Underworld - Evolution again. I couldn't finish it the first time in the 5-days allowed for a rentall but this time I finally did. It was much worse than the original Underworld.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang was another terrible movie. The part played by Robert Downey Jr. was simply out of control. Nothing he did was intelligent. The reviews that I read were all positive but I don't understand how they can give it ratings like that. Since I couldn't finish watching it, maybe something good happened after the mid-point, which is when I killed it.

20 June 2006 - I rented Syriana. I knew that it was going to be rough to watch and it was. I didn't expect the ending. I didn't know what to expect and that kept my interest into what has to be a fairly slow movie.

4 June 2006 - I bought "The Three Buirials of Mellquiades Estrada. It was Tommy Lee Jones directorial debut. I thought it was well done, just slow. A Horseback trip from Texas to a site in Mexico never went anywhere fast except when the part played by Barry Pepper tried to escape. I didn't particularly like it but I watched from start to finish. It was another flawed personality to redemption movie for Pepper.

Firewall was not given many great reviews. It was a good 3-star movie. I needed 3-days to finish it.

13 May 2006 - I rented "Shadows in the Sun". It starred Joshua Jackson, Harvey Keitel, Claire Forlani, and John Rhys-Davies. I don't understand how Rhys-Davies was listed that way because Giancarlo Giannini contributed much more to the movie. His somewhat tarnished Priest made it interesting. Perhaps I still had the image of him pinching the reporter's behind in "Man on Fire". I had to chuckle because it has only been 2 days since I watched Gunfighters Revenge and seriously considered one of the reviewers comment that he thought Keitel would do anything for money. Then, up pops SITS and I erased everything I thought about his choice of parts. I watched the movie from start to finish without stopping once. I also liked it much more than "Under the Tuscan Sun". The characters had a lot more meat to them.

The New World was a beautiful movie. It had all of this really great cinematography. Unfortunately, the script just didn't make any sense. I would have to include it in my "Terrible Movies".

28 April 2006 - I rented Casanova, and purchased Tristan+Isolde and Aeon Flux.I had problems watching Aeon Flux but I didn't have any trouble finishing the movie. My neighbor thought that Casanova was hilarious. I have serious problems with deceit that plays mind games with other people. Casanova violated that the worst and Tristan+Isolde was next in line. I didn't finish either of them.

22 April 2006 - I rented Stagecoach last night. It had Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and a number of top notch actors. It was an almost formula western. It was still entertaining.

12 April 2006 - I ended up renting "Dreamer". It was not a subject I am really interested in but it had actors that I find do really good jobs. You had Dakota Fanning playing a daughter (Cale Crane) that has a joke played on her by her father, Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) and she comes through. The grandfather, Pop Crane is played by Kris Kristofferson. Pop and Ben have basically flawed personalities. If anyone could grasp defeat from the jaws of victory, it seems to be this family of horse trainers. Cale has a dream about racing her horse. She has 51% of the horse and it is up to her. Fanning was 10 years old at the time but, as an actress, displays a maturity many years beyond her age. Cale was originally written as a boy but was changed to a girl so they could use Fanning. Most of the story is the build up to the final race. Of course, you will have to rent it to find out what happened. I only watched it once, but I watched all of the special features. I only do the special feature thing on movies that I enjoy and want to know more.

24 March 2006 - I ended up buying "A History of Violence". I was kind of sorry that I did. I enjoyed the movie but not well enough to purchase it. Reviewed in Drama.

23 March 2006 - I rented a movie called South From Granada. It was based on the trip to Southern Spain by Gerald Brenan. Reviewed in Spanish Cinema.

At the same time, I purchased Luminarias. It is about 4 professional amigas from East LA. They have problems with themselves and how they have been treated. They also have problems with men. It was more enjoyable than South From Grenada and it is also reviewed in Spanish Cinema.

22 March 2006 - There are a number of movies that I have watched since I updated this page. Nothing really jumped out and made me spend the time to review their work.

30 November 2005 - I watched Mr. & Mrs. Smith. I was debating about renting and was told that was a good idea. They have watched me buy many DVDs and had an idea of my likes. They were right. It was sort of interesting and purchasing it would have irritated me.

22 November 2005 - I purchased Stealth. I enjoyed it. It was much more enjoyable than the reviews. Some of the dynamics of flight of the stealth planes borders on unreasonable but you have to see the planes being launched on an aircraft carrier. It is like they mimic the launch of real planes. Besides, Jessica Biel is really hard to watch.

18 October 2005 - I watched "Batman Begins". There were parts that really bothered me. It was like the script writer suddenly pushed a dumb switch. The rest of the time it was an interesting movie.

15 October 2005 - I watched "The Interpreter". I really hesitated watching this movie. In my mind, I keep seeing Sean Penn from "Ridgemont High". I have finally come to the conclusion that it is time to change the image I have in my mind. With a little luck, I will now see him in his part in "The Interpreter". That is a much more satisfying image. The Interpreter was dark with layer upon layer of complicities. If you read the reviews, there are a lot of things that would not happen in the real world but this is a movie. Penn and Kidman's characters were both flawed by memories. The ending allowed a release of sorts of their emotional burden. Their characters were a different version of my flawed character(s) with a redeeming ending that I seem to like so well.

12 October 2005 - I watched "Kingdom of Heaven" when I was in Kelowna, BC. It was finally released on DVD and I watched it again. There were a lot of movies that I thought about seeing this summer but I never got around to seeing them. I have not watched many movies about the crusades. To watch a movie about them and then buy the DVD makes KoH unique.

Hondo was also recently released. This is a great, old, John Wayne movie. It was filmed in 1953. Batjac productions have been releasing some of the old John Wayne movies. You have some old film with almost HD quality. The original story was by Louie L'amour and the screenplay was by James Edward Grant. One of the commenters stated that Grant wrote the way Wayne liked. Wayne had a family of actors that were frequently in his films. The only current director/producer that does that is Robert Rodriquez. Watching movies by these two groups is to get used to people and see them play different parts. They almost grow into family.

27 June 2005 - I keep bumping into "Asesino en Serio" in the Spanish movie DVD area. I finally purchased it and found that they have made it so you can't play it on your PCs. The area that makes it readable on the computer has been destroyed physically. Having to watch it on either of my bad TVs instead of the hi-res computer monitor is really difficult to do. Today is a real possiblility because my ADSL line from Verizon has gone flatline. My ISP has no working DSL lines. So, watching a movie in a boring setup is better than being bored and doing nothing. I didn't get very far until I watched a scene that cracked me up. The part played by Ochoa takes a flash photo of a TV. For the unknowing, that blanks out the image and you get a photo of the monitor that looks like the TV hasn't been turned on.

He has this great looking girl friend but she gets him too excited. They barely get started and El Comandante is done. He is basically conflicted. The killer is killing the women with pleasure and El Comandante can't satisfy his woman.

5 June 2005 - I purchased Deserted Seas (Desiertos Mares). Pobre Juan, he is a complete twit. His wife moves out and he virtually becomes useless. I can only watch it for 5-10 minutes at a time. The only redeeming moments are Juan as a child but even then, his developing, but flawed character comes into play. In numerous scenes, you can see the microphone at the top of the screen. They must have been really desperate for it to win 3 Mexican Academy Awards.

13 May 2005 - I rented "What the Bleep Do We Know!?". I watched it for an hour, decided the BS factor was too high and took it back. I rented it for $3 and get $0.50 back if I don't keep it for more than one night.

What I mean by BS factor is that you watch shows that are supposedly about enlightening you or exposing you to "something". They show "something" and then review it with an "expert". Sometimes, the experts get a little weird on you. I felt the experts on WTBDWK were getting weird on me. I have taken quantum physics courses when I was majoring in Physics at the University. Their idea of quantum physic and mine were vastly different. They maybe right. I don't have a PhD in Quantum Physics.

8 April 2005 - I rented "Elektra". I think that people either have problems with comic characters brought to life or they don't. I didn't have any problem enjoying Catwoman and neither did I have a problem with Elektra. There were a few places where the mysticism got a little bit strong. The tatoo man is a good example and so is typhoid Mary. Full review is in "Action Movies".

4 April 2005 - I came across a movie called "Paloma de Papel" or "Paper Dove". It was about a young boy named Juan and his encounter with the Peruvian Communist Party. You have awesome views of the Andes and then you are shown the terribly depressing life in an village. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema".

28 March 2005 - I watched "En la puta Vida" or (Tricky Life) in English.. It is a story about a pretty and trusting Uruguayan that is taken advantage of by her boy friend(s). Her dream of a beauty parlor is destroyed and she becomes a prostitute to earn money. She is in a vicious circle and how she gets out of the downward spiral makes the movie interesting. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema"

27 March 2005 - I just finished watching Sin Dejar Huella (Without A Trace). The Spanish is not complicated. You may learn a couple of new swear words but they keep the Spanish pretty simple. The music is all norteño. Me gusta norteño. There are lots of twists and turns before Marilu and Aurelia make it to Cancún. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema".

17 March 2005 - I was bored and watched "Doña Bárbara" again. It is a strong movie about the Arauca region of Venezuela in 1929. The only thing they didn´t play was some of the "música del llanero" I like to listen to. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema".

15 March 2005 - I was listening to something about Frida Kahlo and the comment was made that each generation seems to find her as if they were the first. She was never that popular while she was alive but seemed to reach a peak in the 1980's. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema".

28 February 2005 - I saw the movie "Gods and Generals" with a special price. I watched the movie "Gettysburg" a long time ago. Both movies are based on books by the Sharaa's. Full reviews are in "Military or History".

25 February 2005 - Since 5 February, I have watched a number of "Cinema Latino" movies. Most of them were interesting. Doña Bárbara was considered to be a witch. It was a story about 1929 Argentina and the conflict between the 2 largest ranches in a valley.

"Dust to Dust" and "Son del mar" were also interesting. "Dust to Dust" was about 2 nietos taking the ceniza (ash) of their abuelo to be buried at sea in Acupulco. Their grandfather spelled out how he wanted to be treated when he died but his children were not content with doing that. There were surprises, which made it kind of funny at the same time.

"Son del mar" was mostly about a woman whose husband appeared to have died fishing in the ocean. Then, he suddenly reappears and expects to take off where he had left but the wife had remarried. The ending was different.

Then, I made the mistake of renting "Bullfighter" and "Motorcycle Diaries". "Motorcycle Diaries" just made me a little bit angry. Che had his idea of what was the solution and I didn't happen to agree with him. Full review of Motorcycle Diaries is in "Spanish Cinema". Full review of Bullfighter is in "Action Movies".

5 February 2005 - I finished watching "Mr. 3000" this morning. It had some really stupid spots and then it ran from highs to lows. Mr. 3000 would get full of himself and someone would bring his ego back in check. The ego check was the high and full of himself was the low. Having him do the "right thing" made the movie.

I have watched a few movies with sound tracks that were only in español. They were "Oro Diablo", Coqueta, Santitos and a "Tin Tan" movie. Oro Diablo is a movie from Venezuela and is about life in a gold rush city. The Spanish is not complicated. It is mostly swearing and the same old comments. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema".

Coqueta is a movie staring Lucerito and Pedrito Fernández. I bought it to see what Lucero Léon was like before she was just known as Lucero. It reminded me of a Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee musical movie but with Méxican actors that were around 13-14 years old. I have only watched part of Santitos and do not have any comments. I haven´t watched the "Tin Tan" movie.

I bought Catwoman and Cellular. My friends thought Catwoman was pretty bad but if I like anime, Catwoman was pretty good. I think Holly Berry is the prettiest actress in Hollywood right now. So, I am easy to impress.

Cellular made me walk a few times. I would pause the DVD and walk around. Once I got past him shooting the "take a number" machine in the cell phone store, I didn't have any problems.

16 January 2005 - I found a fairly good web page on "Manuel Rubén Abimael Guzmán Reynoso" who is known by the name "Abimael Guzmán", the founder of the Sendero Luminoso. See Wikipedia. I am still bothered by the movie "The Dancer Upstairs" but I am slowly relaxing. I met some people from Peru and they told me how some of the corruption occurs. You have a bunch of boys that belong to the same fútbol club and they eventually go to the same college. When they become important people, they had a tendancy to pass what came their way along to their buddies. You never see this anywhere but it is how ordinary people in Peru think.

8 December 2004 - I rented and then purchased the movie "Maria Full of Grace". Maria (Catalina Sandino Moreno) is a strong minded teenager from rural Columbia. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema".

7 November 2004 - I purchased Bourne Supremacy. It is a continuation of Bourne Identity. Jason was once part of the Treadstone Project and people just won't leave him alone. In the movie, they try to assassinate him but get his wife instead. The rest of the movie is about payback. He is very good a what he does and everyone involved with killing his wife ends up dead. There are several tense moments when the CIA project leader ends up in the scope of his sniper rifle. She wasn't involved with killing his wife and so Jason lets her know that he is nearby and probably has her in his crosshairs. Full review is in "Action Movies".

3 November 2004 - My book order from Barnes & Noble arrived. I had done a web search on "sendero luminoso" and decided to order "The Monkey's Paw" by Robin Kirk. At times, I think the God's protect the truly stupid actions by intelligent people. She went to Ayacucho, Peru in 1983. Her goal was to interview Abimael Guzman, an action that would have only gotten her executed. Eventually, she documented the life of the people she encountered during that timeframe. When it comes to poverty, the only America's country with worse conditions was Hati. I found the book really interesting because I can finally understand some of the conditions that nutured the SL. An ordinary person could not help improve their conditions and maybe that will let me finally relax.

21 October 2004 - Few movies have affected me so profoundly as "The Dancer Upstairs" did. Everytime I watched it, I wanted to know more about the real policeman that caught Abimael Guzman. Agustine Rojas in the movie was based on General Antonio Vidal. There are books on the subject but most of them are now out of print. What is scary is that Peru is giving them a new trial, which is to begin 5 November 2004. Full review is in "Spanish Cinema"

14 September 2004 - The movie Man on Fire caught my eye. It starred Denzel Washington, who I am not a big fan of. I thought he only played whiners. This movie changed my mind. He did not whine other than he was burned out of killing as an assassin. Dakota Fanning played the part of Pita, the girl he was hired to protect. At first, she really annoyed him but he finally opens up to her. She was kidnapped and Creasy (Washington) was almost killed. A drop was setup to pay the kidnapping ransom and corrupt Mexican cops killed the people picking up the money. The kidnapper called the parents and told them as a revenger for killing a relative, he had killed Pita. When Creasy has recovered enough from his wounds, he decides to go for revenge. Creasy tracks down everyone involved with the kidnapping and kills them. He trades himself to "El Voz" for Pita and dies in their automobile. I really liked the movie and because of that, I even purchased the special edition.

7 April 2004 - I finally finished watching Firefly. I was really amazed that I didn't watch it when it was being broadcast on Fox TV. The local Fox station has such terrible coverage where I live that it is too much to watch. If there were enough shows to be worth the bother, I qualify to get it on my DirecTV satelite dish.

30 March 2004 - I have 3 movies that I would like to own. One of them just became available. It is called "Final Countdown" and stars a number of people such as Kirk Douglas. The dog fight between 2 - F-14s and 2 - Japanese Zeros is timeless. The other 2 include Cate Capshaw as one of the stars. They are "Code Name: Dancer" and "The Quick And The Dead". Q&D also has Sam Elliot as a primary character. It is a story by Louis L'Amour.

29 March 2004 - I have become a fan of sorts of "The Rock". I thought his acting ability consisted of his patented scowl. Seeing him in "Rundown" was much more interesting because you got to see him do a number of stunts. One of the consistant features of Rundown was TR doing something. You knew it was him because when s**t happened, he was facing the camera. A stunt double is always facing away from the camera. So, I was impressed with Rundown.

I was chating with a friend about movies. He had just seen Open Range and I commented that I liked it and Once Upon a Time In Mexico. He joked that Salma Hayek was his dream date. I agreed but later changed my mind because I have liked Consuelo Gómez from El Mariachi better.

One of my funny movie scenes is the scene in El Mariachi where Gallardo thinks he could lose an important masculine item to Domino (Gómez) while she is demanding that he play his guitar and sing. He is inspired, calls her a princess with norteño eyes, and is told that he needs a better sense of humour because it is only a dull letter opener. I think Salma is better looking but I also think I would go dumb and mute or sit there with a silly grin on my face if she sat down at my table. Salma has been in so many movies that I think are good that I would want to be able to say something profound and I didn't think that I could think of anything profound to say. I didn't think I would have that problem with Consuelo.

24 March 2004 - I purchased the Firefly package some time ago but never got around to watching it. It was a series on Fox TV and that is a channel that I don't receive well enough to bother watching anything. I qualify to get it on my satelite dish but have not had enough interest to even go that far. There are 4 DVDs and you have 4 shows on a DVD. I finished the 1st DVD last night and I am half way through the 2nd. It is an interesting show. I read that the sales of the DVDs were such that they are going to make a feature film called Serenity.

18 March 2004 - I came back to read this section. If I wait a week or so, I see sections that I think I had turned my brain off when I wrote them. What popped into my mind this time was digital imaging. I have been waiting for years for digital cameras to catch up to what I can do with a 6x6 camera. There are 14-16 Mpixel cameras available now. The problem is they typically want $7K for them. I want a snapshot camera not something a professional needs. What brought this up was Rodriquez's comments about adding special effects. With film, you would have to scan, add the change, and create new film. You don't with digital movies. You edit them on a computer and write a new tape. I relate to that because last fall, I went to Yellowstone Park and shot a few rolls of film. I had 4 geysers going off in my field of view in less than 45 minutes. That doesn't happen often. Because of the work involved, I still haven't felt like scanning the negatives and so they are sitting on my desk. I could have just loaded them onto my vacation web folder if I had used a digital camera.

8 March 2004 - I thought that I would list the movies that were released in the last few months that I found interesting. At the head of the list is "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" by Robert Rodriquez. If you have followed El Mariachi like I have, then the update to Mexico won't be a surprise. I am always amazed at the people that don't watch the special features on the DVDs. I finished watching Mexico around 3 am but didn't finish the special features until 5:30 am. I don't typically watch the voice over section but I am facinated by how they made the movie and scenes that were cut for one reason or another. Rodriquez switched to high definition (HD) cameras. What he can do because of the new technology is awesome. He made a statement similar to "Mexico was made with older generation technology. New technology with something like 2x more resolution is now available and the format used to make Mexico is as bad as it will ever be."

A change of pace is the movie "Open Range" by Kevin Costner. Costner had a hard time getting finances for this movie. He hasn't been involved with a truely successful movie since "Dances With Wolves". I don't know how much money Range earned but it was a good movie. Watching the trouble they went through to make the movie was even more interesting. The special features makes watching a DVD much more interesting. Reviewed in Western Movies.

The next one that I found interesting was Kingpin. It was a 3-cd set about a television show called Kingpin. It was basically Traffic but years before the movie was made. It has Mexican bandidos that truely have neither a conscience nor a respect of life. Miguel Cadena decides to take control. They are like a moth flying around a light and you expect their life to crash at some point. Miguel's brother is having an affair with the Police Chief's wife and this is causing a lot of trouble. So, it isn't a big surprise when the crash happens. It is who survives that is the surprise. You can watch in Spanish or English.

7 March 2004 - This page has really fallen behind what I have been watching. I was in Hollywood Video several nights ago and rented a movie called "The Dancer Upstairs". It was directed by John Malkovich. The movie was a cat and mouse thing about an honest police officer trying to track down Ezequiel, the leader of a Maoist guerrilla group, that resembles the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso in Spanish). The SL never numbered more than 10,000 but killed 30,000 people. If you remember anything about Shining Path, you should do a web search and remind yourself of what was involved. These were uneducated people being lead by a University Professor. You only have to remember the collapse of Cambodia to see what would happen in Peru.

The sad part was the ending where Yolanda sends Rejas the following message

No me llames
No intentes ayudarle
Estoy muerta
Sólo vivo para la revolución
Bastia

Which translates to "Don't contact me, Don't help me, I am dead, I live only for the revolution, Enough. The book had the comment as "Tell him I am dead. I live only for the revolution." I am not sure which version I think is better.

Rejas promises to not run for the Presidency if Yolanda is placed in a cell with light and quietly released after 5 years. Yolanda was so afraid of the dark that she would almost go catatonic and to be left in a prison cell without light because of what he had done was more than Rejas could deal with. When Rejas finally figures out that he has won a personal, moral victory by promising not to run for the presidency, even after reading the note from Yolanda, he has to hurry catch a taxi to watch his daughter perform. The movie could have ended when he read the message from Yolanda but that would have been very depressing. Having Rejas arrive in time to watch his daughter was a much nicer ending. The ending in the book was different and simply left you wondering what if. I still think the movie was the story Shakespere wanted to write as a re-do.

15 November 2003 - I watched an interesting movie tonight. It was called "Live From Baghdad". It was about the CNN news team that was in Baghdad when the bomb fell in 1991. I was one of those people glued to their television set and watching the CNN report via my satelite tv receiver.

I was reminded of another movie that I watched but can never remember the name. It was called "Behind the Sun". It is a kind of western movie about a feud involving 2 families. In this case, it is about the Northeastern badlands of Brazil. It is a foreign language film with English subtitles. I never looked to see what the primary language was but was confused because about 1/2 of the words sounded like Spanish words that I recognized and I didn't have a clue on the rest. My Scotish/English friend suggested that it might be Portuguese. It was a good guess and I later looked up additional information about the DVD at Amazon Books.

26 October 2003 - It is time to upgrade my movie list. It may not be complete but at least I will upgrade it a little bit. The full set of episodes of the Battlestar Galactica TV series was released. It was a must purchase along with the Indiana Jones set. I rented a movie called "Bend it like Beckham". It is a multi-cultural story about a nice Hindu girl's conflict of playing football (soccer to the USA), which she was really good at, and fitting the image expected from the Hindu women. According to the various releases, the term "bend it" comes from Beckhams uncanny ability to curve the soccer ball around the apposing teams defenders. The reviewers all refered to it as a "feel good" movie and I had to agree.

I was watching Beckett, the Marlins pitcher, throw curves that seemed to break a few inches and were good enough to shut out the New York Yankees and win the 2003 World Series. His breaking curve ball was really puny in comparison with the curve of several feet that Jess's kicks were imparting to the soccer ball.

There were other releases that stand out. For example, "The Lion King" was released on DVD. Purchasing it just to listen to Elton John's songs was a sufficient reason and to get the songs and the movie just seemed to double the number of reasons. I had to laugh at "Chasing Papi". You had these three, really hot looking Hispanic gals, chasing a guy that wasn't as monogomous as he had told each of them. I remember a magazine article about "Why do Latin men all cheat" and I could see 3 good examples.

It is 10 July 2003 - I am not spending time updating my movie list. There have been a number of movies that I like. For example, on 9 July I had a root canal done on one of my upper right molars. My movie of choice was Reign of Fire. It was really different watching it on special glasses that I wore while they were working on me. This was probably the 3rd or 4th time that I had watched it. The action and noise kept me from thinking about the drilling that was going on.

There are several movies that I have watched several times and some of therm are "Tears of The Sun", WSABI, the special edition of "Dances With Wolves", and "Gangs of New York". There are a number of old movies that are being re-marketed at < $10.

22 March 2003 - I just finished watching a movie in Mandran with English subtitles. The movie was "The Road Home" and the star that caught my eye as Zhang Ziyi. I tried to watch it 3 times and then it caught my attention and I couldn't even pause it to get a drink of water. It was really the story of a Chinese village girl name Di that fell in love with the village teacher. In a time when marriages were arranged, a couple falling in love was unheard of. The finish was hauling him home to be buried.

30 January 2003 - I came across a movie called Songcatcher. It was a Sundance Film Festival winner. The story was about a Professor of Music that felt she was being treated badly the the University and went to visit her sister. There she fell in love with the ballads from the hill country of Tennessee. In the story, the people's ancestory were pure Scot-English that went back to the 1700's. The ballads had been passed on from generation to succeeding generation. It reminded me of how the dueling banjos caught my attention when I first saw the movie Deliverance.

1 November 2002 - It was 1am when I walked into our local Wal Mart Supercenter and found the movie Spiderman on sale. Well, it is 2 hours later and I finished watching it for the first time. It was dark and wild.

27 February 2002 and I took advantage of "Wacky Wednesday" to watch "Wind River". It is the story of a "white indian boy" with the Shoshoni name of Yagaichi (the crier). The movie is based on a book about Nick Wilson who became the white-indian. I did a web search and besides the DVD being available at Amazon.com, a review popped up in the Oklahom Indian Times. According to the movie, Nick Wilson went on to be one of the founding riders of the Pony Express. His descendants live in Wilson, Wyoming, a small town west of Jackson Hole. A few months later, I ended up buying the book. The movie was different. Like most stories, they don't have time to do the whole book and merge characters until they have a good story line.
